UK plumbing experts reveals DIY competence gap between generations

If you're under 35 and you know what a stopcock is, can change a fuse or bleed a radiator, you're in the minority, according to research from plumbing and drainage experts

New research from, the national fixed price plumbing and drainage service, reveals that a "DIY intelligence" gap has opened up between today's young adults and their parents' generation, with more than one in three under 35s admitting that they ‘call dad’ before trying to fix a problem themselves.

Seven in ten (70%) of adults under 35 said they would need to call in assistance to turn off their water supply in the event of a flood, compared to only 20% of over 55s. The findings also show that half of UK adults (24 million people) don't know how to do at least one of the following: rewire a plug, bleed a radiator or clear a blocked drain.

The generation gap was also evident in the cost of household jobs, with older generations (55+) being far more willing to shop around for the best quote (75%) compared with only half (56%) of under 35s. Alarming statistics also revealed that over 55s believed that they were five times less likely to be ripped off by a rogue tradesman than under 35s and they also had a better understanding of the language that workmen use – only three in ten (30%) of under 35s know what a stopcock is, compared to more than eight in ten (84%) of over 55s.

Josh Savinson founder of said: “Resolving problems around the home can feel like another chore in our busy lives and there is no shame in calling in the experts.

“What is alarming though is that younger adults are more likely to be ripped off by rogue tradesmen, which may be due to them having less knowledge around the home than their parent’s generation. has launched to offer UK homeowners fixed priced plumbing and drainage jobs, so customers know what they are getting up front, whether they are 25 or 85!”
