High end Brooklyn, NY based furniture manufacturer, Atlas Industries, buys 55,000 square foot industrial complex in the City of Newburgh, NY. Will look to attract others.
City of Newburgh, NY (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 -- Atlas Industries, a high-end furniture maker known for its modular modern furniture is now working from an old hand clutch factory, 55 miles north of the George Washington Bridge in the City Of Newburgh, NY. Their furniture can be found in local restaurants, hotels and spas or in chic places around the globe.
Previously located in a 6,000 square foot workspace in Brooklyn, Atlas made the move upstate when they found a 55,000 square foot building on Newburgh’s Spring Street that allowed them to expand their space to 14,000 square feet and work more efficiently. With dedicated space for specific tasks and room for additional machinery they are now growing their core business. They have developed the remaining 40,000 square feet of space and renovated it to Atlas design standards creating an appealing atmosphere for like minded companies. This space is now being rented for other creative businesses to call home too! In the process Atlas has produced a “creative community.”
Thomas Wright, one of Atlas’ principals, says the move to Newburgh has allowed them to operate more effectively and everyone can focus on business growth. His crew spends less effort on lower value, day to day operations like making sure no one is parked in their driveway or stopping traffic to unload boxes by hand onto the sidewalk. Now with three loading docks on their property, receiving or shipping is a breeze.
Wright is not oblivious to Newburgh’s woes. However, he thinks the negative perception of Newburgh does not reflect the reality that he has seen — and he says he has not encountered any problems. He likens moving his business to Newburgh to the challenges presented by moving to neighborhoods like the Lower East Side, Red Hook or Williamsburg before they developed. And like others that made the move to developing locations early, he got a larger, more affordable place to run his business that enabled him to try new things, like opening an art gallery and becoming a landlord.
Joe Fratesi, the other Atlas partner puts it another way. "It was a no-brainer to move from Brooklyn to Newburgh last year. It didn't really cramp our business given the proximity to NYC and easy access to highways used by suppliers. We were able to buy this building for less than the cost of renting a building in Brooklyn for one year."
