Gilbane Building Company Selected for New Middle School Project
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 01, 2014 -- Gilbane Building Company has been awarded the comprehensive preconstruction and construction management services contract for the new middle school for Brookwood School District 167 in Glenwood, IL. The District also includes portions of Chicago Heights, Lansing and Lynwood.
The existing aging Brookwood Middle School would have required a costly renovation in order to maintain it as is, which would merely present a short-term solution. Therefore the District made the decision to build a new school. Voters approved the referendum in November 2012 for a bond sale to raise $15.8 million for the construction of the new school to replace the Brookwood Middle School building. According to the Cook County Clerk’s office, voters casted 3,168 ballots in favor of the idea, compared to 1,465 votes against it.
The current Brookwood Middle School, which is more than 100 years old, will be demolished after the new school is built. The preconstruction efforts will require a continued community engagement process throughout design and construction. Gilbane and the District will work together to promote local subcontractor participation for the project. The project has an expected occupancy in time for the 2016-2017 school year.
