Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) May 02, 2014 -- According to new research published by the American College of Rheumatology, women who make a habit of consuming low-fat or fat-free milk show a slower progression of knee osteoarthritis. The study also found that women who consume cheese experience faster onset of the disease.
“This is the first time we’ve seen milk consumption linked with osteoarthritis in this way,” said Rajan M. Patel, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and co-medical director of the Knee Surgery Center of Excellence. “What’s so important about this is that delaying the onset of osteoarthritis will also help delay the need for women to have knee replacement surgery.”
Osteoarthritis is a common type of arthritis in which the cartilage that cushions the joint begins to break down from wear and tear. When this happens, the bones rub against each other. Common symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
● Pain
● Stiffness
● Swelling
● Tenderness
● Limited range of motion
● Cracking or grinding sound with movement
While the findings of this study are not applicable to men, osteoarthritis affects both men and women. Common risk factors for developing the disease include:
● Advanced age
● Family history
● Obesity
● Joint injury
● Joint deformity
● Repetitive use of joint
Treatment for Knee Arthritis
Patients who suffer from knee arthritis have a variety of treatment options available to them. The first course of treatment for knee arthritis is typically non-surgical. This can include exercise, weight loss, activity modification, drug therapy, and certain injections. Patients whose arthritis does not respond to conservative treatment may need to consider surgery.
“Surgical options for knee arthritis patients range from cartilage grafting to partial or total knee replacement,” said Andrew Weiss, MD, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and co-medical director of the Knee Surgery Center of Excellence. “The important thing to remember is that patients don’t have to live in pain. We have a variety of effective treatments for knee arthritis.”
