ALISO VIEJO, Calif: Cianna Medical, Inc., a women’s health company, today announced it has secured a $10 million financing deal with GE Capital’s Healthcare Financial Services business. The funds will be used to further product development efforts in the breast conservation therapy (BCT) market, as well as expand the commercialization of the company’s SAVI® breast brachytherapy applicator.
“Cianna Medical is the only company dedicated exclusively to breast conservation therapy, and I’m extremely proud of the tireless efforts our team has made over the past several years to reduce the burden that breast cancer treatment places on women and their families,” said Jill Anderson, president and CEO of Cianna Medical. “This funding acknowledges the strength of our company and positions us favorably for continued research, development, and expansion of products that improve women’s quality of life, both in the U.S. and abroad.”
SAVI is a strut-based applicator that delivers a form of accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) known as breast brachytherapy, a five-day course of targeted radiation for early-stage breast cancer. It is used as part of BCT, which consists of a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. Traditionally, the radiation portion consisted of whole breast irradiation (WBI), which requires six to seven weeks of daily treatments.
With more than 10 years of clinical evidence showing excellent outcomes in efficacy and safety, breast brachytherapy is proven to be an appropriate treatment for early-stage breast cancer. Clinical data with four-and-a-half years of follow-up demonstrates excellent long-term outcomes with SAVI breast brachytherapy, including low risk of recurrence, minimal side effects and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
“Women deserve choices in their breast cancer treatment. For those who choose breast conservation therapy, we firmly believe they should have the option of a highly targeted radiation treatment with proven outcomes,” said Ms. Anderson.
