Mesa County Increases Collaboration and Productivity with Google Apps
Denver, CO (PRWEB) May 08, 2014 -- Mesa County, Colorado, founded in 1883, currently has a population of about 145,000 people. In partnership with their citizens, the government of Mesa County’s mission is to maintain and enhance quality of life by implementing effective community services that provide public health, safety and well-being. Mesa County’s slogan is to “build a community of opportunities for all residents with a focus on the future”, which is evident in their decision to move their county to the Google cloud.
Mesa County was operating on a Novell GroupWise email platform. They wanted to find a new technical solution that would provide their employees with the ability to collaborate on projects and day-to-day work, as well as provide easy-to-access email for all employees. Mesa County wanted to build an infrastructure that was always on real time access (AORTA) and that would reduce the burden of administration email on Mesa County IT. The solution needed to provide increased reliability, external hosting, 24/7 support, as well as provide higher cost savings due to decreasing budgets.
Tempus Nova recommended Google Apps for Government (GAFG), a robust cloud-based collaboration and productivity suite accessible to employees anytime, anywhere, from any authorized device. We proposed a two-phased approach to migrate Mesa County’s 1,100 users, distribution lists, and additional resources located in 21 buildings throughout the county. The first phase was a Core IT Pilot consisting of a select group of IT-only staff members that used Google Apps to test the settings, configurations, go-live strategy, and support protocols, as well as vet Google Apps within Mesa County’s technical environment. The second phase was a Go Live consisting of all remaining users in the county. Tempus Nova’s Certified Google Resources set up, configured, tested, validated and implemented the GAFG solution. This included ensuring the county’s security and configuration settings were properly setup; migrating user data to the new Google environment; delivering custom training classes on the core applications, and providing live support for each of go-live. Mesa County leveraged Tempus Nova’s training classes over approximately two months following their final go-live to increase user adoption, specifically in using the Google Drive applications.
Tempus Nova partnered with Mesa County IT to implement all aspects of their GAFG deployment. We were responsible for planning, technical configuration, migration, change management, training and support. The migration of all 1,100 users was successfully completed in eight weeks. Mesa County has been pleased with the business transformation provided by the collaboration, mobility, and cost savings of Google Apps. The staff is enjoying the advantages of remote anytime access to the services, the real time collaboration benefits, and an increase in productivity. County staff is increasingly bringing their own devices to work and not relying on Blackberry handhelds as the standard. The health department has adopted the use of Google Forms to help with scheduling appointments for the public, and the IT department can now support more variety among Mesa County’s customer, which has created happier customers.
