TapPainter App Approaches $20,000 Kickstarter Goal, Will Let You Test Interior Room Colors Before You Paint

Created by the Fremont, CA startup MDi Touch, the first iPad version of TapPainter was released on March 21, 2014. A Kickstarter campaign has been launched to fund development of an enhanced TapPainter Pro version, which will provide even more accurate recoloring, introduce two way in-app messaging and new iPhone/Android compatibility.
TapPainter was imagined by Mark Lichman after several attempts to pick room colors over the phone with his wife, Sharon Chang, with interesting and unexpected color results. His idea was to use a mobile device to visualize walls in new colors, in real time. This requires preservation of the existing lighting conditions on the walls, as well as accurate adjustment of the new colors to account for those lighting conditions.
“We wanted to accomplish two things; first, to use the physics of light to make the recoloring as accurate as possible, and second, to make the simplest and most beautiful user interface,” says Mark.
The standard version of TapPainter, already for iPad only, is a digital paint color visualizer ideal for planning room painting projects. Using TapPainter, you can capture an image or use an existing one on your mobile device, select a color, and repaint the image quickly and easily. An almost photographic repainting of an interior is accomplished with a simple tap on the screen, preserving initial lighting conditions and leaving room objects untouched. For best results, the company recommends using images with clearly-defined wall borders, ideally in natural light or with the addition of artificial light as needed.
Colors for virtual repainting can be selected in one of three ways: entering a paint color code; selecting a hue from a color fan deck; or using TapPainter’s color rings to mix a custom color, which is then converted to the closest available paint code from a selected brand. TapPainter is loaded with color fan decks from most major US paint brands including Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and many others. Two color fan decks are available with the downloaded product, and additional fan decks may be unlocked with an in-app purchase. The user can explore over 16 million colors and repaint an unlimited number of images at no additional charge.
MDi Touch needs to raise $20,000 from backers on Kickstarter in order to increase the accuracy of wall detection and expand to iPhone. Stretch goals include Android versions and the addition of home exterior recoloring.
