Harriet Schoeffler from TURNING STONEchoice (TSC) has been working with the children using a self-empowering character education program at Katz Academy on making effective choices, regardless of their situation. Harriet has been working with the children to strive and develop students' self-awareness and critical thinking skills to guide them in making positive decisions so they feel good about themselves and in control of their living.

The main focus of the TSC Program emphasizes that young individuals are in control of their choices because they are in control of their lives. Feeling in control of one's life is a necessary part of having positive self-esteem and becomes fundamentally necessary in dealing with challenges such as teasing, bullying, substance abuse and stress.

A majority of teachers and children at Katz Academy Charter School reported that the program improved student ability to make good social choices, and helped students to more effectively manage normative peer challenges like social conflict and bullying.

Children from Katz learn positive choice making through popular children's literature, authentic scenarios that allow for open discussion and communication on real life situations, arts & crafts and many other activities.

With the increase of social media, technology and other demands of modern life, there is a vital need for young people to understand how to make better choices. Yet choice-making skills are not taught in the majority of today's schools. TURNING STONEchoice can help fill this growing void.
