International think tank monitoring agency Transparify has named the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) as one of only 21 organizations globally to “set the gold standard” in publicly disclosing sources of funding. CIGI was the only think tank in Canada to receive this rating.

In its report "How Transparent are Think Tanks about Who Funds Them?", Transparify sampled the public financial reporting of 169 think tanks from all major continents. CIGI was included in the group of 21 that received the maximum possible five-star rating, “reflecting their exemplary transparency when it comes to publicly disclosing their sources of funding.”

“These think tanks use their websites to disclose in great detail who funds them, with what sums, and for what research projects,” according to the report. “They set the gold standard for the field as a whole.”

Among the others joining CIGI in the “gold standard” group are: African Economic Research Consortium (Kenya); Bruegel (Belgium); Centre for Policy Research (India); Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore); and, Overseas Development Institute (UK).

“CIGI’s standing in the 2014 Transparify ratings is a reflection of our organization’s commitment to financial transparency,” said J. Fred Kuntz, CIGI’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “We are pleased to be leading the international field in this regard.”
