Although he was born more than 200 years ago, Abraham Lincoln remains a fascinating historic figure. This new book chronicles Lincoln’s life and times, touching on significant events, personalities and the politics that influenced his decisions and, ultimately, his path to leadership. Lincoln wrote about himself rarely, leaving it up to others to tell about his contributions, and Gary Alan Dorris effectively presents his own perspective on the legend and the man.
“Abraham Lincoln: An Uncommon, Common Man” details Lincoln’s early years to his lawyer’s practice and forays into politics, including the Lincoln-Douglas debate, how he became known as “Honest Abe” and his fervent dedication to the United States as a union. The book features 34 chapters centered on a specific time in his life or a significant event that shaped Lincoln’s views, decisions and direction. Dorris writes about the Civil War but only as it pertains to its influences on Lincoln’s actions and thoughts. Reports on Lincoln’s religious beliefs, humor and melancholia enhance this fascinating look at the nation’s 16th president.
Featuring a narrative style rather than a textbook one, the author’s enthusiasm for his subject comes through loud and clear. Language from Lincoln’s time period adds a note of authenticity to this fresh view of Lincoln not only as a president but as a man, and the lessons his life can teach. As Dorris writes, “even a brief study of the life of Abraham Lincoln can teach valuable life lessons about friendship, dedication to a cause, civic duty, and honesty; while facing and overcoming hardships, disappointments and tragedy.”
Author Gary Alan Dorris grew up in a small town in southern Illinois and graduated from Southern Illinois University. He was commissioned as an Air Force officer and left active duty in 1970 as a captain. He began a banking and finance career in Spokane, Wash., and later moved to Scottsdale to become president of a bank holding company. The retiree and his wife, Kay, his high school sweetheart, live in Scottsdale. They celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
