Online nightlife and gaming magazine ADANAI released its report on the demographics of the world’s most popular DJs. The report looks at several attributes of the new age pop stars with a focus on country of origin, race and gender. Using the DJ Mag Top 100 as a reference for the world’s most popular DJs, ADANAI does some statistical analysis to test the diversity of the group. Electronic Dance Music is generally considered a diverse musical form and this research tests that hypothesis.
“We were a bit shocked at some of the findings in our research. For example, we always knew the Netherlands had a big influence in the EDM world but did not know it was that dominant,” said Ki, ADANAI’s founder. “Unfortunately, our research also turned up some rather sobering facts about race and gender.”
This research is not meant to be definitive but does provide some interesting insights on the demographics of the most popular DJs. Is the lack of popular African-Americans DJs an indicator that African-Americans are less likely to be EDM fans? Why are there so few female DJs amongst the top 100? Why are so many of the popular DJs from the Netherlands?
