British Customs Riders Zack Courts and Adam Waheed Face Off in Thruxton Cup Sonoma

Motorcyclist Magazine's Zack Courts faced off with Motorcycle USA's Adam Waheed at the Sonoma round of the 2014 Thruxton Cup series. These journalists rode Triumph Thruxtons prepared by British Customs, who also provide trackside support and special product pricing for participants.

The Thruxton Cup traveled to sunny Sonoma, California for the fourth installment of the 2014 season on May 1st and 2nd. With the Willow Springs double-header in the books, Motorcyclist’s Zack Courts aimed to defend his victory down south against a newcomer to the Thruxton Cup ranks: Motorcycle USA’s Adam Waheed.

With a second double-header in as many weeks on the menu, Courts came into the Sonoma rounds feeling extremely comfortable on his British Customs BES Racing Thruxton. While the paddock stirred with talks of a moto journalist showdown, it was once again Jack Pfeifer who stepped up to challenge Courts around the track. In race one on Thursday, the No. X44 Team Orthopedics Triumph Thruxton of Jack Pfeifer and the No. 65 of Courts were back and forth from the start. Eventually, Pfeifer took the lead for good and scored the win.

For Courts, the challenge to win race two began even before the green flag flew. He entered another race on Friday morning as a warm-up, but wound up on the ground when he hit an oil patch. “I only had about 20 minutes to get the bike ready for the next race, but everyone in the pits pulled together and did everything they needed to do to get me back on track for the Thruxton race,” Courts said. Fortunately for Courts, British Customs had Rider Support Tech Paul Runion on hand to help Courts get back on the track. The Latus Racing Triumph Team member spearheaded the effort to put Thruxtons on the track in 2005, his presence in the pits adding to the excitement.

Race two was another back and forth battle, and Courts and Pfeifer traded for the lead three times on the last lap. Each rider’s weakness is quickly exposed on the track, just as they also use their strengths to their advantage. Courts and Pfeifer exemplified this at Sonoma as each excelled in different parts of the track, making these battles an absolute thrill to witness. Finally, in the final corner, Courts passed for first and held on to the checkered flag.

Pfeifer and Courts were both pleased with the weekend’s results, and Pfeifer summed it up by simply saying, “It was awesome! That was probably the most fun racing I’ve done in a lot of years. It’s been fun battling with Zack.”

Adam Waheed came into the Sonoma round fresh, making his Thruxton Cup debut. Despite a distinct lack of seat time on the British Customs prepared Thruxton, Waheed managed to put together an impressive pair of third place finishes. “I think it’s an awesome avenue for any type of racer. It doesn’t matter what your background in motorcycles is, the Thruxton Cup is the exact package you need to have fun,” he said.

Waheed also remarked on the support that British Customs gives the series, saying, “It personifies how people need to feel about this kind of racing in order for it to be successful: you have to be enthusiastic and do a lot of giving. (Support) improves everyone’s experience.”

British Customs support comes in many forms at Thruxton Cup events. As the official performance part supplier of the Thruxton Cup, BC parts are designed and tested to not only improve performance, but also install easily with basic tools. In addition to providing discount parts through the British Customs Rider Support program, BC brings in professional mechanics to assist riders throughout the weekend.
