I totally support PHE in their efforts to ensure water is treated throughout the country as a way to reduce the oral problems experienced by children.

Tariq Drabu is a Manchester born and educated dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He is the owner of the very successful Langley Dental Practice and also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Assessment Clinic and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. Dr Drabu was one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom and spent years working at busy dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. He is also a mentor and tutor to postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published in the Denistry website on dental caries and the number of children affected. The full article can be read here.

Tariq Drabu said, “There is an alarming number of children being admitted to hospital in certain areas throughout the United Kingdom with dental caries. In Sheffield there were over eight hundred children admitted to hospital, while in Leicestershire and Bournemouth, there were only six children admitted.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say, “Public Health England (PHE) believe this may be a result of water fluoridation. The figures clearly show the higher number of children with dental caries are in areas that don’t have fluoride in their water, while the lower numbers are areas that have taken advantage of water fluoridation. PHE are encouraging areas to use this water treatment in their water supply and if they can get all UK areas on board, the results will speak for themselves.”

Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “There are a number of factors which are also associated with dental caries in children in the country from the dental care access available to recognising problems and ensuring the children get the dental assessment they need. My practice is always educating children and parents on dental health as part of our treatment plans and in this way parents are aware of potential problems which can result in oral care problems for their children moving forward. I totally support PHE in their efforts to ensure water is treated throughout the country as a way to reduce the oral problems experienced by children. This will reduce the number of children seeking dental treatment before the age of five, in some cases.”
