Dr Tariq Drabu Says It’s Good News About the Possible Periodontitis Drug
(PRWEB) May 16, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon working in the Manchester area. He is one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom and the owner of the very successful Langley Dental Practice. Dr Drabu is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Assessment Clinic and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale and still finds time to mentor and teach postgraduate dentists at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston in oral surgery.
Dr Tariq Drabu was talking about an article published in the Denistry Today website on a drug which could be used to treat periodontitis. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu said, “It is exciting to see that research has found that Oxantel, a drug developed for the treatment of worms, may have a positive effect on periodontitis. A study has shown that this drug can block the enzymes which are responsible for the bacteria which creates a biofilm. It is the biofilm that is linked to periodontitis.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “Periodontitis is a serious problem within adults around the world and the treatments are often successful, but not guaranteed. Advances in dentistry have improved how we work with this serious gum disease, helping patients eliminate the risk and improve their overall gum health. It is so encouraging to know that there may be a drug coming available in the near future which can help us help our patients combat with severe form of gum disease.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “Up to twenty percent of the world’s population have periodontitis and these figures are even higher here in the UK. It is anticipated that more than eighty percent of UK adults have some form of gum disease, but even the less severe gingivitis can turn to periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis doesn’t only affect the gums, it can result in tooth loss, and has suggested links to heart problems and arthritis. It is so important that patients learn about this disease, along with the signs and symptoms. I always recommend my patients visit the surgery for their check-ups to ensure we can catch disease like this early, to improve the outcome of the treatments available.”
