Doctors Head Extensive Six-Day Medical Mission in Guatemala to Treat Underserved Community
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) May 12, 2014 -- Dr. Babak Larian of the CENTER for Advanced Head & Neck Surgery in Beverly Hills announced today that he will embark on his 12th medical mission in Guatemala on May 16. The purpose of the trip is to address medical conditions in an underserved community near the town of Chichicastenango.
Local churches and radio programs advertise that medical care from the United States will be provided over six days, and patients line-up in front of designated locations to be seen by doctors that can evaluate and treat their specific needs.
A Source of Hope
“Through the medical mission in one of Guatemala’s rural indigenous areas, the community gets access to medical care that is not typically available,” Dr. Larian explained. “We want to alleviate as many medical problems as we can during the trip. By providing United States-quality medical care with highly trained physicians, many Guatemalans will receive life-changing medical treatment.”
Team of Specialists
Approximately 110 professionals will participate in the extensive medical effort to set up a hospital in a new site in rural Guatemala to treat people who have not had adequate care for their conditions. The unique event will allow patients to be evaluated by specialists who can address complex medical concerns. This new location is a bible studies center that will be transformed into a hospital with clinics and operating rooms for six days only.
“We're hoping to be able to serve over 2,000 people,” Dr. Larian said. “As a group, we should be able to perform 130 surgeries and 200 dental procedures. It would be great if we could do even more. We have an extremely enthusiastic team whose main priority is to use their skills and abilities as much as possible.”
Complete Medical Service
Everything used to treat patients will be brought from the United States and set up at the camp site of the medical mission. Equipment, medications, disposables, and beds will all be provided as part of the service.
“We expect to serve a diverse group of patients,” Dr. Larian said. “During past trips, we’ve removed gallbladders, performed hysterectomies and Caesarian sections, treated head and neck cancers, repaired hand deformities to make them more functional, and reconstructed Cleft lips and palates, among many other surgeries.”
