New Florida Laws Crack Down on Child Sex Predators
(PRWEB) May 12, 2014 -- Four new bills were signed into state law last week to crack down on child sexual predators. Michael Steinger, a child sex abuse attorney and founder of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene, says the laws close loopholes and toughen penalties—but do little to help victims themselves.
The new laws were driven in part by recent high profile child abduction cases, according to Jacksonville 4 News (retrieved 4.6.2014). Diena Thompson, whose 8-year-old daughter Somer Thompson was abducted and murdered, has worked actively to get the legislation passed.
“Ms. Thompson and all the other parents, activists and lawmakers who worked so hard on this have done a wonderful thing,” Steinger said. “These laws will help prevent sex criminals from getting off on a technicality or being released from prison early.”
But Steinger says more progress is needed in address sex crimes against children, especially in how victims and their families are treated.
“There is nothing more traumatic than a child being violated in this way,” Steinger said. “Most of our laws are built around punishing the offenders, which is important, but we also need to help rebuild lives.”
Steinger said that many families don’t realize they have options for legal compensation that can help pay for counseling and medical bills.
“Find a lawyer you trust and ask about your options,” he advised. “It can never be erased, but it is possible to make a new start.”
