Police say that the man killed in an out-of-control Mercedes-Benz last week was 91 years old. San Diego personal injury lawyer Michael Steinger says that senior citizens often have the most serious injuries in even minor car crashes.

The man, Samuel Mayo Rinaker Jr., was a passenger in the Mercedes when the driver lost control on La Jolla Scenic Drive according to CBS 8 News (retrieved 04.06.2014). The vehicle veered off course and struck a curb and a second Mercedes before finally coming to a stop when it slammed into a light post.

“A crash like this can be serious for anyone, of any age group,” said Steinger, the founder of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene law firm. “But the older an individual is, the harder an impact is on their body.”

Steinger says that even when a senior citizen survives a collision, recovery can be much slower and more difficult.

“As you age your body is less able to heal from broken bones, whiplash or life-saving surgery,” he said. “Even a seemingly minor injury can become a major disability. It’s tragic.”

The driver who lost control is 57 years old. Police say he and the driver of the other vehicle has only non-life-threatening injuries.

Steinger says that seniors often don’t know they’re entitled to compensation for their injuries.

“They have a very independent attitude, which is admirable,” he said. “But the law says they’re entitled to compensation to help pay for medical bills and rehabilitation. It’s important to speak to a lawyer after an accident.”
