Etsy Lead Designer, Cap Watkins, joins this week's episode of On Branding to discuss project management, the company's unique 'maker' culture, and accessible design traits.
Etsy is an online marketplace that inspires craftspeople, artisans, and designers around the world to buy and sell one-of-a-kind goods. Since the New York-based company's launch in 2005, Etsy has empowered people to launch and support their own creative businesses, inspiring a new culture of commerce, and a shift in ap-preciation for art and design that fulfills the world in meaningful ways. With 1 million shops and 30 million members globally, these shops have sold over $1.35 billion in unique and hand-crafted goods.
“People are the ultimate UX problem,” Watkins says on the episode. “What I care about is the journey to the product. The biggest challenge for our team is designing for the whole [multi-screen] flow, between screens, scenarios, and needs. At Etsy, we use tools like Basecamp religiously, so people working on unrelated projects can always be present to ask questions and oversee outcomes.”
Earlier this month, Etsy was named one of Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Award in Corporate Achievement, granted by Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
“As a Creative Director in a leadership position, I can relate to and appreciate Cap’s candor about his path to becoming a manager, and his sentiments around building a supportive creative culture,” said Kendra Lively, Creative Director at Brand Fever. “Managing people is a unique skill that we don’t always set out to pursue as a specific goal in our careers. This episode is a testament to the fact that, sometimes, the role chooses you.”
