Recent Tornado Warnings in Monroe County, Local Insurance Agency Releases Safety Tips For Residents
Monroe, MI (PRWEB) May 14, 2014 -- This week, a confirmed funnel cloud was reported in Taylor, followed by a tornado warning for the Wayne, Monroe, Livingston, and Washtenaw counties, according to the Detroit Free Press. In addition to tornados, severe storms this time of year can yield hail, wind, and other potentially damaging weather events. In order to help residents prepare for severe storms this summer, Insurance Center of Monroe would like to offer safety information and advice.
• Each household should have an emergency kit containing essential supplies in the event of a severe storm or tornado. It is best if the kit includes nonperishable food, fresh water, first aid supplies, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and other necessities. Make sure that every family member knows where this emergency kit is located in the house.
• Parents should teach children the common warning signs of tornados and other severe weather, as well as what the different warning levels and terms signify. For example, the signature signs of a tornado include a dark or greenish sky, a loud roaring noise, hail, and a large low-lying cloud. A storm watch means that a severe storm is possible in the area and that individuals should be alert of approaching storms. A storm warning means that a severe storm, tornado, or another weather event has been sighted or reported. In the event of a warning, it is crucial to take shelter in a safe location as soon as possible.
• A family emergency communication plan should be established in case family members are not together when a weather emergency occurs. It is important for everyone to know how to get to a safe place, how to contact one another, and what to do in various emergency situations.
