On Saturday, April 26, 2014, the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase celebrated their 19th year of steeplechase racing and community support. The race brought over 13,500 patrons to the grounds of the Brooklandwood Racecourse for first class racing in the beautiful and unique setting.
The race is made possible by The Queen’s Cup sponsors. The sponsors include presenting sponsor BAE Systems, Sonitrol Verified Security, GMC Dealers of the Carolinas, TruGreen, and WTVI. Through their generous support, the race purse was increased allowing for higher caliber racing.
The racing action comprised of 31 horses spread between a six race card. Michael J. Moran’s STAYING ON (IRE) moved into contention on the final turn, rushed to the front on the outside at the final fence, and drew clear to an authoritative 2 1/4-length victory against five other Novices in the $50,000 Queen’s Cup MPC ‘Chase Stakes, the featured race of the 19th annual Queen’s Cup Steeplechase. He had won Belmont Park’s $75,000 William Entenmann Memorial Novice Stakes last September and was denied a win by a nose in the first division of Foxbrook Champion Hurdle.
The highlight for the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase is not only the thrill of the race, but the thrill of giving back to the community. Through increased attendance and raffle sales, the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase was able to generously donate to the Alzheimer's Association of Western North Carolina, whose mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
