Suunto Ambit 2R and Forerunner 220 are the two best running watches on the market at under $300 says the test staff at the Heart Rate Watch Company.
"We test dozens of these running watches every year and these two GPS watches are real standouts for quality running data," says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "Fast GPS, vibration alerts, accurate heart rate data, good software platforms, built-in cadence and quality construction are things these two watches share."
"Garmin Forerunner 220 is the lightest fully integrated GPS running watch and has Bluetooth Smart for mobile data transfer," says Squire. He adds, "Custom interval training, accurate distance data, vibration alerts, high screen resolution and a hinged band for better fit help define this watch."
Suunto Ambit 2R
"Suunto Ambit 2R has the better everyday watch looks and is exceptionally well-made with steel bezels, plus it is constructed in Finland," says Squire. He adds, "Suunto Ambit 2R does offer onscreen trackback navigation, while Garmin Forerunner 220 does not, so if navigation is important, this is your watch."
Which is Better?
"This really depends upon your individualized needs," says Squire. He adds, "Garmin 220 has Bluetooth but Suunto Ambit 2R offers navigation while both do a great job with all major running metrics."
"A lot of the time it really boils down to personal preference and highest priority features in making the final decision," says Squire. He adds, "These two watches are so good but Ambit 2R did have slightly longer battery life than Garmin 220, but both watches last over 5 hours."
