Ground-breaking willpower course holds the key to health and wellbeing
Cardiff, Wales (PRWEB UK) 21 May 2014 -- Cardiff-based not-for-profit company, Life Surfing, has launched a new 1-day training course for people whose willpower lets them down.
Life Surfing has developed the course to help people understand and address the lack of willpower that results in millions of people leading less creative, fulfilling, and healthy lives than would otherwise be the case.
Drawing on the latest social science research, the course helps people to understand and avoid "The Willpower Trap". Life Surfing Coach/Trainer Tim Watkins explains:
"We have been taught to believe that willpower is something you are born with. You either have it or you don't... and if you don't, that's tough!
"Far too many of us are stuck in this belief, which leads to low self-esteem, and often results in the very behaviours (e.g. smoking, over-eating, procrastinating, etc) that we want to avoid.
"What many people fail to realise is that a desire to change is just one element of willpower... and not the most important. Without creating the right environment and enabling support, most people simply end up setting themselves up to fail".
The course is an important new approach to public health, addressing widespread problems like smoking, obesity and lack of physical fitness. Tim Watkins explains:
"Public health campaigns usually assume that people who engage in unhealthy behaviour do not know how to be healthy. But study after study has shown that smokers know full well that smoking is dangerous, obese people know they should be eating healthy foods, and couch potatoes know they should do more. Without willpower, no amount of information is going to make a difference.
"Improving our willpower could be the most important thing we can do for our health and wellbeing - both as individuals and as a nation".
Life Surfing will be running Willpower Workout courses in Cardiff from June 2014. They are also working on a web-based course to be provided later in the year.
