“What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions” is a hilarious and informative book of answers to important questions most people have probably never thought to ask. It features new and never before answered questions, along with updated and expanded versions of the most popular content from the “xkcd” website. Munroe has a passionate fan following, with his stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language and love. He responds to a lot of unique questions, from what the relativistic effects are of a baseball pitched at near the speed of light to the many horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements. In pursuit of answers, Munroe runs computer simulations, pores over stacks of declassified military research memos, solves differential equations and consults with nuclear reactor operators. His responses are masterpieces of clarity and hilarity.

“Blackstone is extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with Randall Munroe on this highly unique project. When Andy Kifer at The Gernert Company sent this my way, I jumped into the auction immediately and held fast,” said Lysa Williams, Blackstone acquisitions editor. “It’s so exciting to win a title by an author that has such a strong following.”

Millions of people visit each week to read Randall Munroe’s iconic webcomic “xkcd” and his science question-and-answer blog “What If?” Randall worked building robots at NASA’s Langley Research Center before leaving in 2006 to draw comics on the Internet full time. In 2013, main-belt asteroid 4942 Munroe was named in his honor.
