According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry:
- A child who is the victim of prolonged sexual abuse usually develops low self esteem, a feeling of worthlessness and an abnormal or distorted view of sex. The child may become withdrawn and mistrustful of adults and become suicidal.
According to the Journal of Adolescent Health
- Compared to those with no history of sexual abuse, young males who were sexually abused were five times more likely to cause teen pregnancy, three times more likely to have multiple sexual partners and two times more likely to have unprotected sex.
- Children who do not live with both parents as well as children living in homes marked by parental discord, divorce, or domestic violence have a high risk of being sexually abused.
This book (When I Became a Man) is a firsthand account of Mr. Burkhalter's life from the age of three years old to his late thirties. He intensely captures each event in his life with great exactness.
"I can remember feeling lost when I was trying to find help," says Mr. Burkhalter. "When you are a victim and you have a victim mentality, there’s a feeling that no one can understand what you are going through. I wanted this book to be an inspiration to those that are dealing with similar issues (sexual abuse, depression and low self esteem) and let them know that it is alright to seek professional help. Especially for men, as a man it was tough to admit that my way of self healing was doing more harm than good."
When I Became a Man by John H. Burkhalter III was published April 16, 2014. It is currently available on Amazon.com on paperback and Amazon Kindle
