When Eric & Alyssa Ascencio along with Yuri and Claudia Lorenzsonn decided to open Fresh Coat Painters of West Houston in early 2013, Eric’s colon cancer was in remission and he had high hopes for launching a professional painting company in his community. But just before the official launch date, Eric got the news – the cancer was back, it was in his liver and lungs, and it was stage four. Then, while fighting his own battle, his 8-year-old daughter Mia was diagnosed with Leukemia.

While Mia and Eric continue to fight, they are doing better and they want to show their thanks for all the support they received from the community by painting rooms for others battling cancer at no charge. In fact, Fresh Coat West Houston plans to paint two free rooms for one family each quarter, and the first winners have been selected – the Lauritzen Family of Katy, TX.

“We’ve known we wanted to give back since the beginning, but it’s become even more important to us since Mia’s diagnosis. The community has just been fantastic. We’ve received everything from donations to meals cooked by our neighbors and it has made a big different for us. Painting rooms for people who are fighting cancer is just something we can do to pay it forward,” Eric said.

Fresh Coat offers professional residential and commercial painting services including interior and exterior painting, wood staining and refinishing, wallpaper removal and many other services for nearly every protective coating application. The Ascencio family asked for nominations of who should receive the rooms. The nominations for next quarter will being accepted on their website at http://www.freshcoatwesthouston.com beginning June 1st.

“There are no benefits of having a child with cancer. It is hard as a parent to watch him miss out on so much. But when something like this happens, when we are given a gift like this, it makes it just a little easier. A coat of paint may not seem like such a big deal to some, but for our three year old boy, the smiles and excitement of getting his new ‘Spiderman’ room is priceless. Not to mention our excitement on finally getting our dream room too. Sometimes something like this is what makes the difference between letting the cancer consume you or being strong enough to get through one more day,” Mrs. Lauritzen said.

Fresh Coat is committed to quality products and services. The company offers a 3-3-3 customer service pledge, which means calls will be answered by a live person within three minutes, a quote will be delivered within three days (customer schedule permitting) and the job will be started within three weeks. They use quality, environmentally safe materials and offer a live 24/7 customer service center, online scheduling and free detailed quotes. Fresh Coat Painters employs painters – not subcontractors – and is fully insured and bonded. All employees are background checked.

Fresh Coat of West Houston serves Houston, River Oaks, Memorial Park, West University Place and The Villages.

Part of the reason Fresh Coat West Houston can offer this service is because their paint partner, Sherwin Williams, is donating the paint for the projects.

“Livening up someone’s home when they are going through this type of struggle can make a real difference. This is something small we can do to help brighten their days,” Eric said. “Battling cancer is challenging, but Mia and I are living proof that life doesn’t have to stop. We were hoping to have Mia help with this first room painting – even if she could only carry the buckets – but her counts are too low right now. Maybe the next time she will be able to.”

Fresh Coat was founded in 2004 as part of Strategic Franchising Systems. In the last year, Fresh Coat has been included in the Bond’s Top 100 and named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise 500 list. Fresh Coat also is part of the International Franchise Association, the Small Business Association’s Franchise Registry, VetFran and Minority Fran.
