Senator Rene Garcia Contributes to Florida National University’s Inaugural Criminal Justice Symposium
Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 21, 2014 -- To commemorate National Police Week, as well as the varied professionals who work to protect our community and refine the measures of our criminal justice system in all levels of government, Florida National University (FNU) held its First Annual Criminal Justice Symposium on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at FNU’s Hialeah Campus. Signifying the value of public service, the university also invited dignitaries Senator Rene Garcia, Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo, District 13, and Deputy Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department Juan Perez to share their thoughts.
To supplement the panelist discussion, FNU held a special reception prior to the symposium to thank the panelists and invited dignitaries for their participation. As the honored guest speaker for the symposium, Juan Perez received the Dr. Jose Regueiro Law Enforcement Award during the reception.
“This symposium is being held to show Florida National University’s gratitude to all those in the law enforcement field who have dedicated their lives to help keep our community safe,” said Dr. Maria C. Regueiro, FNU President/CEO.
Featuring panelists from every inch of the criminal justice system, including members of law enforcement, private security organizers, and leaders in the forensic psychology field, Florida National University assembled this symposium to educate today’s youth about the various options for a career in criminal justice. Spanning a wide variety of topics, the panelists discussed the innovations of CSI, the capacity of the private sector to combat terrorism, the interaction of mental health and the criminal justice system, and the duties of law enforcement officers.
“FNU hosted the First Annual Criminal Justice Symposium, first, to honor Deputy Director Perez with the Dr. Jose Regueiro Law Enforcement Award during National Law Enforcement Week, and second, to educate the community on current criminal justice issues and trends affecting communities. The Symposium was a huge success. The six panel members provided information ranging from neuro-psychology to crime scene forensics. FNU is on a steadfast journey to be a leader in community activism,” said Elizabeth Caridad Barcena, JD, LLM, Criminal Justice & Legal Studies Department Head at Florida National University.
Due to the success of the inaugural symposium, Florida National University intends to convert this educational opportunity into a tradition. Considering the university already acknowledges the valuable role criminal justice professionals play in modern society, exemplified through the inception of the Dr. Jose Regueiro Law Enforcement Award, it is clear that the university will continue to develop its ability to enhance the educational attainment of those interested in the field.
