May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and in observation of the occasion, HearingPlanet is encouraging everyone to learn the signs of speech disorders and hearing loss, which are often preventable.

May’s Better Hearing and Speech Month is the perfect time for everyone to learn how to recognize the early signs of hearing and speech disorders and hearing loss, which are among the most common disabilities in the United States. Unlike many other disabilities, these disorders often are reversible and even preventable with early intervention.

  •     Persistent ear discomfort after exposure to loud noise (regular and constant listening to electronics at high volumes)

In adults, signs of hearing loss include:

  •     Inattentiveness
  •     Buzzing or ringing in their ears
  •     Failure to respond to spoken words
  •     Persistent ear discomfort after exposure to loud noise (regular and constant listening to electronics at high volumes)
  •     Muffled hearing
  •     Constant frustration hearing speech and other sounds
  •     Avoids conversation
  •     Social isolation
  •     Depression
