Top New Jersey Official Visits Rape Crisis Center at CarePoint Health-Christ Hospital
Jersey City, NJ (PRWEB) May 23, 2014 -- In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Hudson SPEAKS Against Sexual Violence, the rape crisis center funded by the nonprofit CarePoint Health Foundation, was pleased to welcome New Jersey Department of Children and Families Commissioner Allison Blake on April 24, 2014. Hudson SPEAKS Against Sexual Violence is located at Christ Hospital in Jersey City and supports and serves the needs of survivors of sexual assault in Hudson County. CarePoint Health President and CEO Peter Kelly, CarePoint Health VP Paula Nevoso, Hoboken University Medical Center CEO Paul Walker, Jersey City Health and Human Services director Stacey Flanagan, Hudson County freeholder Anthony Romano, Jersey City council president Rolando Lavarro, Hudson County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon and other local officials also attended the event.
The tour of the facility was led by Manisha Shah, senior program coordinator of Hudson SPEAKS. The visitors were taken to rooms where survivors of sexual assault receive help and attended a presentation explaining the work of Hudson SPEAKS. According to nj.com, Commissioner Blake remarked shortly after Shah’s presentation: “I think they’re extraordinary. You clearly have a group of professionals who are really dedicated to this issue. We can’t be in every community, and we’re relying on organizations like this to meet the needs of their community. Their attention to the cultural issues is just outstanding.”
Hudson SPEAKS, is located within Christ Hospital, and is sponsored by the non-profit CarePoint Health Foundation which raises funds to strengthen access to healthcare for uninsured and underinsured Hudson County residents. Hudson SPEAKS (Support, Prevent, Educate, Advocate, Keep, Strong) Against Sexual Violence provides free and confidential services to survivors of sexual assault ages 12 and older, regardless of race, gender and socioeconomic status. Their survivor-centric services include a 24 hour crisis hotline; 24 hour escorts to hospitals, courts, and law enforcement agencies; individual counseling for survivors and their significant others; group counseling for survivors and their significant others; recruitment and training of Rape Care Advocates who provide accompaniments to survivors; and community education on issues pertaining to sexual assault, such as awareness and risk reduction.
