New York, NY (PRWEB) May 25, 2014
A Queens man has died after being the victim of a double hit-and-run, reports the ABC News (Queens Bicyclist, Victim in Double Hit and Run, Dies, May 12, 2014). Police are on the search for two drivers who each struck the cyclist and failed to remain on the scene. According to the report, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Rockaway Boulevard near 90th Street in Ozone Park.
The 40-year-old victim was first allegedly hit by a flatbed truck and then by a party van. Police say the man was sideswiped and struck by the passenger side of a black Mercedes Benz van, which caused him to fall to the ground where he was then run over. The driver of the van allegedly stopped and got out of his vehicle momentarily, but then got back in and drove off. People near by tried to help the victim and he was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, but he died early Monday morning.
Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP, weighed-in on the deadly accident. “The law is straightforward: if you are in an accident, you stay at the scene until authorities arrive. If the allegations are true and not one, but two drivers fled the scene, this is an absolute outrage. While in this case it seems there was nothing anyone could have done to save the man, imagine if an accident like this were to happen and the victim could be saved with medical intervention, but the only people around decided to flee. It is cowardice that shows total disregard for the life of another and if true in this case, the authorities should address the actions of the two drivers accordingly.”
“Hopefully police will be able to track down the drivers and hold them accountable. Of course, that will not bring back the victim, but it will at least allow the family of the deceased to bring those responsible to justice. When someone is the victim of an accident, they or their loved ones can often bring a claim against the person who caused the accident and be compensated to the extent possible under the law. The idea is not to substitute a person with money, but to alleviate the additional financial burdens that may arise for the loved ones of the deceased or that arise in the form of medical bills, and also to act as a deterrent in the case where the responsible party was doing something negligent or worse. Filing a claim is complicated and especially when you have lost a love one, it is probably the last thing you want to worry about. Hiring the right legal expert will give you the piece of mind of knowing that your claim is being handled and that you can focus on what’s truly important to you. Consulting with a lawyer is free, and you only ever pay a fee if you win, so there is no risk in calling and finding out what your options are.”
