The Brazilian team is looking to become the first host nation to win the World Cup since the 1998 French team had their way with Brazil in the finals. Brazil has won the most World Cup championships with five including their most recent title in 2002 when they beat Germany. The Brazilian national team is currently ranked as the sixth best team in the world, according to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association. When they welcome the 31 other nations to their country, they will be doing so as part of Group A, where they will be taking on Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.
Every four years, there are four nations that are stuck to compete in what is known only as the “Group of Death.” This year, that would be Group G which includes Portugal, Germany, Ghana and the United States. These four teams are currently ranked as the third, second, 38th and 13th best teams in the world. While many may immediately think that Ghana does not have a chance in this group, they have had great success against the United States and could pose issues for any team in the tournament.
The United States will be looking for a better performance this spring when they travel to Brazil than they have had the previous two World Cup tournaments. Before even traveling to Brazil, the American team has a series of big friendly games scheduled to warm up, but they haven’t looked good in their previous two. In March, they lost to Ukraine, 2-0, and in April, after jumping out to a 2-0 lead against Mexico, squandered the lead and played a 2-2 draw.
Group F is also an intriguing group that features the second ranked team in the world Argentina, plus a team with a lot of potential, Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are currently ranked as the 25th best team in the world according to FIFA, but after an impressive qualifying bracket that saw them finish first with an 8-1-1 record and a +24 goal differential. Should they find a way to continue their success when playing in Brazil, it could be an interesting series of events.
Many of the stadiums the World Cup will be held at have been built specifically for this tournament. These world class structures will give fans a great vantage point from throughout their stadium. From Curitiba to Manaus to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, there will be futbol spread across Brazil for the fans to enjoy.
