The Pearce Law Firm, P.C. Announces Two Scholarships For The 2015 School Year
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) May 27, 2014 -- The Pearce Law Firm, P.C., announces their college scholarship programs for the 2015 school year benefitting high school students interested in pursuing a career in law and women law students.
The Pearce Law Firm, P.C., a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based personal injury law firm is announcing their college scholarship for high school students available and current women law students, both for the 2015 school year. Two scholarships are available benefitting students aspiring to ultimately become attorneys.
Two Scholarships
According to Edith Pearce, owner of The Pearce Law Firm, P.C., her firm offers two separate scholarships: The Pearce Law Firm - Aspiring Pennsylvania Attorneys Scholarship and The Pearce Law Firm - Empowering Women in Law Scholarship. Each is designed to encourage and support exceptional leadership and achievement in aspiring future attorneys.
The Pearce Law Firm - Aspiring Pennsylvania Attorneys Scholarship
This scholarship is, as its name implies, for Pennsylvania high school students aspiring to become attorneys. In addition to specific minimum requirements found on the firm’s website, special consideration will be afforded students that participate in law-related extra-curricular activities. Activities the selection committee looks for include participating in law-related educational programs; the Pennsylvania Bar Association mock trial competition; high school debate team; as well as peer mediation and conflict resolution programs. The committee will consider any leadership roles the student has accepted or assumed in high school as well.
Open to young women or men, the Pearce Law Firm will offer this $2,000.00 award to a Pennsylvania high school student for the beginning of the 2015 fall semester.
The Pearce Law Firm - Empowering Women in Law Scholarship
Unlike the Aspiring Pennsylvania Attorneys Scholarship, The Pearce Law Firm – Empowering Women in Law Scholarship is open to women nationwide who are currently attending law school in the United States. Women who demonstrate outstanding achievement and leadership by example in their current law school activities will be given special consideration. Unlike the scholarship for high school students, this scholarship considers financial need as part of the criteria.
The scholarship will award $2000.00 to the recipient for the beginning of the fall semester (2015).
Motivation for the awards
Edith Pearce views the scholarships her firm offers as ways to give back to her profession and show gratitude to those who have helped her. She talks of her motivation to become an attorney, recalling her defining moment, “I was working for a law firm in high school and I thought it would be such an honor to represent people and try to help them with their legal issues.”
By encouraging outstanding young students, Edith hopes to maintain and possibly improve the quality of individuals participating in the field of law. The criteria suggest that students of significant leadership skills and high academic achievement would be eligible for these awards.
According to the American Bar Association, women comprise about 1/3 of the legal profession. Ms. Pearce sees this demographic as significant improvement over the 4% of attorneys who were women just over 30 years ago. She hopes The Pearce Law Firm’s scholarship will further encourage women to enter this profession.
Not far removed from the time when successful women lawyers on TV were portrayed as being more attractive than smart, Ms. Pearce, a member of MENSA, the high IQ society, believes that sometimes women can be underestimated by a male-dominated field. However, Ms. Pearce uses it to her advantage. She states, “When I first started practicing law, many times the male attorneys would assume I was the court reporter when I entered the room for a deposition; that changed quickly when I started asking their client questions they were not always prepared for.”
Ms. Pearce would like to encourage smart and motivated women to become lawyers, and take advantage of and benefit from the Empowering Women in Law Scholarship. She also hopes the Aspiring Pennsylvania Attorneys Scholarship will inspire some of the best and brightest young men and women in high school to follow her lead and become attorneys.
