Germinating the Seeds of Success
Burlington, NJ (PRWEB) May 29, 2014 -- According to the National Gardening Association, one in every three people in the United States of America grows some sort of food producing garden, and to one New Jersey gardener, that is too low.
“That still leaves over 66% of the people in this country that have yet to experience the joy and sense of accomplishment that growing your own food can bring,” says Mike Podlesny, who owns the Burlington, New Jersey based business, Mike the Gardener Enterprises.
“I am finding, with many of the conversations that I am having with people who currently do not have a garden, don’t do so, because they think they lack the space necessary, or it’s simply too hard,” Podlesny continues. “What it really turns out to be is a lack of information.”
Back in 2009, Podlesny started Mike the Gardener Enterprises through his website AveragePersonGardening.com, distributing vegetable, fruit and herb seeds through their Seeds of the Month Club. Since then, not only has the club grown to distribute seeds to thousands of people in all 50 states and in over 17 countries, he has created a social network of sharing valuable gardening information through Facebook, Twitter, newsletters and other means totaling over 300,000 gardening enthusiasts.
Podlesny also has his own online radio show dedicated to talking about gardening where he has interviewed gardening pros such as PBS’s P. Allen Smith and Martha Stewart Living magazine contributor Stacey Hirvela.
“Sure, we sell seeds, but what good would the seeds be to anybody if people do not have the information they need to grow them successfully,” Says Podlesny. “By getting the correct information out there via social networks and the radio show, we can increase the number of people who not only have a garden, but have a successful garden, and it’s the successful part that is important.”
Podlesny’s goal is to one day see the number as high as nine out of every ten people growing a food producing garden, and that he has helped influence that increase.
