With the help of a supportive and enthusiastic Kickstarter community, GIROPTIC has turned its vision of allowing people to see “Up, Down and All Around” into a reality. After reaching its Kickstarter goal in less than 24 hours, GIROPTIC continued to rally support around the fresh idea of adding color jackets to the camera to add personality, ultimately surpassing the $500K stretch goals and reaching a half million dollars in funding, over 350% over the original goal. With more than 35 more days to go, GIROPTIC is now aiming for a new stretch goal of $750K, that will offer a number of functions and capabilities to the camera.
“Of course you dream that your product will have an impact like this, but we were blown away by the support we’ve received from the community in such a short time frame,” said Richard Ollier, founder of GIROPTIC. “The device represents a new era in visual computing, videography and photography. It’s a great story that so many share our vision.”
The 360cam’s technology is a new way of capturing, broadcasting and enjoying videos. The device is an oblong-shaped design that is no bigger than a large egg. The camera features three 185-degree lenses that overlap, capturing the full field of view. Once captured, the images are processed on the internal processors in real-time, and are stitched together by way of GIROPTIC’s proprietary, patent-pending technology. The new 360cam is the first camera able to take true, high-definition, 360-degree photographs and videos, which can be shared using a number of today’s applications. The 360cam has been in development for more than two years, and will ship to early Kickstarter backers end of the year 2014.
For hitting our next stretch goal is for $750K, we will empower the user the ability to switch from one lens to another and to another in real time — within the same recoding, allowing you to switch from the 360-degree mode to a regular, 130-degree mode. You’ll be able to record wide-angle video from any of the three lenses as you would with any traditional camera. This ability will make the 360cam ultimate versatility.
