Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Helps Improve Colombian Farm Through Direct Trade Process
La Jolla, Calif. (PRWEB) June 05, 2014 -- Specialty coffee retailer, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, announced today their newest offering from Colombia from farming partner Brayan Joven. Experts in the practice of direct sourcing, Roasters United, secured the batch from a recent trip to Colombia where they held a competition among local farmers to identify the best quality lot.
Chuck Patton of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters helped found Roasters United with two other Southern California specialty-coffee roasters, Jeff Duggan of Portola Coffee Lab, and Mike Perry of Klatch Coffee. Roasters United is a transparent, green bean buying protocol aimed at securing top micro-lots, which are coffees scored at 90-plus.
Winner of the first Roasters United Competition, Brayan Joven from Finca Esperanza, is a third-generation coffee farmer, and will use the 1.8 million peso Roasters United Farm Improvement Grant to buy more drying beds, replace farm equipment, and to help pay for transporting coffee to the dry mill.
“Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, and Roasters United have seen the benefits of direct trade coffee sourcing first hand,” said Chuck Patton, owner of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. “Helping individual farmers improve their sustainable farming practices wouldn't be possible through the alternative fair trade model which doesn't allow for individual transactions, and often results in lesser-quality coffee.”
Patton continued, “The Roasters’ United concept is pushing the direct trade model into new territory. With a competitive element, we are giving an opportunity to several farms to sell their coffee for a much higher than fair trade price and access to farm improvement grants.”
The Brayan Joven is available in store, and online for $17.99 per 12 oz bag, and can be shipped in time for a delicious and unique Father's Day gift. Tasting notes for this coffee include: medium bodied, fruity, rich dark chocolate and balanced.
Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has new extended summer hours: Mon-Fri 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Sat-Sun 6:30 a.m. -7:00 p.m. and is located at 5627 La Jolla Boulevard, La Jolla, Ca 92037.
