Windsor Personal Injury Firm Offers Summer Safety Tips
Windsor, ON (PRWEB) May 31, 2014 -- As a driver, as a pedestrian and as a cyclist, we can enjoy the extended hours of daylight, but it comes with a price: being more vigilant on the roads. Nicer weather should not be an excuse for drivers to increase speeds, pay less attention to the roads or forget to stop at stop signs.
Wearing a helmet is an important component to riding a bicycle as helmets can help protect the head from serious brain injuries. Wearing a helmet is not mandatory for adults in Ontario but is highly recommended. It should also be known that helmets do have “expiry dates” with respect to the plastic foam on the interior of a helmet as the material can harden and provide inadequate protection.
As we move into summer, more people may be deciding to commute by bicycle and drivers need to be aware about the increased presence of cyclists.
Drivers and Cyclists need to:
• Keep distractions at bay: put cellphones and smartphones and any items of distraction in your purse or glove compartment;
• Allow for time to get to your destination, as many construction projects happen over the summer, planning ahead means you don’t have to rush your drive and speed;
• Check their surroundings: for cyclists, visibility and being seen by drivers is an issue. Drivers and cyclists should observe intersections and crosswalks and look for hidden driveways where a car or cyclist could come out of;
• Use proper turn signals;
• Practice safe lane changes.
The summer is also a time where people enjoy swimming and boating and other outdoor activities:
• Heading out for a boating excursion? Always remember to wear a life jacket as it acts as a floatation device but also starves off the onset of hypothermia.
• If you have an outdoor pool, consider putting up a barrier around the pool such as a fence or permanent gate to prevent unwanted visitors and to keep children from entering the pool unsupervised.
