The Museum has many exhibitions showcasing creative camera work from a wide range of ages. It even hosts annual contests where aspiring youths residing in San Diego can submit theme based images which are judged for quality and presented among other photographs or films. After undergoing renovations in March of 2000, the museum now has 32,000 square feet which consist of galleries, Jacobs’ Theater, a print-viewing room, archival facilities, and support areas with informative employees. The upcoming 2014 contest will focus on the theme of family and is expected to have its largest turnout yet. San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts also offers film screenings from a variety of local and international film festivals on a regular basis. These screenings cover many different cultures and countries, allowing viewers to learn about the amazing diversity of film found throughout the world.

The Aperture Remix exhibition will be displaying a diverse group of artists’ groundbreaking revisions of images from past publications through masterful camera work and manipulation of light. This list consists of:

The event will present attendees with a chance to see the evolution of photographic trends and delve into the history of the works themselves. It is a superb opportunity to learn about where artists get their inspiration from and how originality can sprout from the past. The event will take place between May 24th and October 5th.

For visitors who love National Parks of the American West, the museum’s After Ansel Adams exhibit is a must see. Ansel Adams is a nationally renowned photographer who is best known for his Zone System technique. His black and white pictures of Yosemite National Park are often used in calendars and due to his distinct style his work continues to influence photo artists today. Other photographers works included in the exhibit are:

These artists offer a rich selection with unique perspectives that capture the essence and history of the National Parks. The varying takes on the beautiful American landscape will provide sightseers with a new outlook on the country’s national treasures. The exhibit, sponsored by the UC San Diego Health System, will take place from May 17th to September 28th.
Planning a Day at MOPA
Tour options include Docent-Led Tours for students, Self-Guided Tours (free for students, $4 for others), Behind-the-Scenes Tours in which tourists are led by museum staff to exclusive areas (maximum 20 people), Print-Viewing Room Tours which are available for: scholars, educators, students, and artists, and lastly, Audio Tours (Smartphones with 3G access required).
General Admission to galleries is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, retired military personnel, and dependents, $6 for students with ID’s, and free for MOPA members, active military personnel, and children 12 or younger.
The Museum allows service animals and is handicap accessible. Its hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Summer hours of operation on Thursdays will be extended from 10 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.
