McLeod Vascular Expands ZONARE ZS3 Ultrasound Diagnostic Offering to Regional Patients
Florence, SC and Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) June 02, 2014 -- The Vascular Program at McLeod Healthcare, a leading regional healthcare provider in South Carolina, announced it is expanding its ZS3 ultrasound systems from ZONARE to four units in order to better serve the facility’s growing patient population. With a patient populace of 1.5 million and five hospital facilities feeding into the practice creating more than 400 outpatient ultrasound procedures per month, the professionals at this outpatient vascular program needed ultrasound systems with rapid image optimization and outstanding image quality.
“Excellent image quality is of utmost importance when selecting an ultrasound system,” said Christopher Cunningham, MD, a board-certified vascular surgeon and medical director of McLeod Vascular.. “It is also critical to rapidly optimize the image and provide a well designed workflow solution to enhance patient throughput. The ZS3 systems provide all of these attributes which has lead us to continue our expansion to four units.”
Cunningham cited a case where a small patient of average weight had both renal arteries visualized by the ZS3 system which is normally always detected only by computed tomography angiography (CTA). The clinician could then insert a small stent (5-6 millimeters) using only the ultrasound guidance which allowed him to see throughout the renal arteries.
“To see both renal arteries simultaneously was absolutely amazing to all of us, especially in such a petite patient,” Cunningham stated. “Approximately 90 percent of the time, both are not visualized with someone this small. Even better, the ZS3 can also provide similar performance on large, difficult-to-image patients.”
Another patient presented complaining of back pain and had been to multiple clinicians without gaining relief or diagnosis prior to coming to McLeod. The patient had a difficult-to-image body with a larger abdomen. Due to breathing issues with oxygen dependency, the patient had to be scanned while sitting at a 45 degree angle. The McLeod clinicians were able to visualize a Type III endovascular leak which was part of a disconnected graft and was leaking into an aneurysm sac. He was referred onto CT and successfully treated.
“Without the ZS3, we would not have seen this abnormality which is such a rarity to detect with ultrasound,” said Cunningham. “These two unusual cases highlight the systems capability to image from a small to large body habitat with even the most difficult-to-image patients. It is very versatile, offering imaging for a wide array of applications.”
McLeod provides multiple imaging and therapeutic services including cranial, venous, arterial, upper/lower abdominal (AAA, endovascular and renal duplex) as well as venous insufficiencies and ablations. The facility is also accredited for extra-venous and arterial applications.
“We are delighted to partner with the professionals at McLeod to bring state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging solutions for the best in patient care,” said Glen Mclaughlin, president and CTO for ZONARE. “Our mutual goal is to continue to provide excellence in patient care while serving a growing patient population. McLeod is an outstanding provider of such care.”
The ZS3 system is based on Zone Sonography™ Technology (ZST) which is an innovative approach to echo data acquisition and image formation. Using a small number of large “zones,” ZST acquires ultrasound data up to ten times faster than conventional ultrasound and extracts more information on each transmit receive cycle. Since the speed of sound traveling through tissue is a physical constant, ZST has a significantly faster acoustic acquisition time enabling superior imaging quality. ZST is a Living Technology which delivers ultrasound imaging excellence based on a dynamic and open architecture that allows continual platform evolvement.
