Doctors Express Phoenix is now fully certified to provide Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals for professional drivers, including long-distance truckers, limousine drivers and taxi drivers.

As of April 2014, every physician in the Phoenix clinic was certified to perform the physical, providing a unified safety benchmark for professional drivers to ensure road safety. Having multiple certified physicians allows more scheduling flexibility for drivers who require the physical to maintain their DOT license.

Clinic administrator Terri Porter recommends that drivers -- including taxi drivers, limousine drivers, and anyone else who requires DOT licensure to perform their job -- inquire about the new certification wherever they schedule their physical, to make sure the facility they choose is in compliance with the most up-to-date DOT regulations.

"Truck drivers need to be careful where they go to get this exam," stresses Porter. "If they don't get it from a certified examiner, the DOT license becomes invalid and may end up costing them thousands of dollars in fines."

The certification material was presented in an online course provided by the National Academy of DOT Examiners. Successful completion of a final test was required for certification.

As for the physical itself, patients must demonstrate certain basic physical capacities in order to pass. These capacities include visual acuity (with or without corrections such as glasses or contact lenses), color discernment, auditory acuity, blood pressure (below a certain range, with or without prescription medication to maintain the threshold), and a blood sugar level below 200. Diabetes controlled through medication or diet is allowed, but if the condition can only be managed through insulin injections, the patient will not pass the exam.
