Medical Marijuana Legislation Passes in New York
Albany, New York (PRWEB) May 30, 2014 -- The New York Times reports on New York Assembly’s newly passed medical marijuana bill which allows possession and use of up to two and a half ounces of marijuana by seriously ill patients. The bill, passed by the assembly this past Tuesday, gives doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners the exclusive right to prescribe medical marijuana to certified patients and licenses approved organizations to administer the drug to those patients. Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried told the New York Times that “there are tens of thousands of New Yorkers with serious, debilitating, life threatening conditions whose lives could be made more tolerable and longer by enacting this legislation.”
According to the New York Times, this isn't the first time that New York has initiated medical marijuana into legislation, as this new bill is a more expansive version of past laws, most of which have been shot down by Assembly Republicans. As with many states that have already legalized medical marijuana, New York will now have the opportunity to see the positive effects that marijuana can bring, not only to a state’s local economy, but to the new industries and business growth that marijuana creates. Assemblyman Stephen M. Katz told the New York Times that each of these “different industries have the ability to create hundreds if not thousands of jobs here in our state.” Katz, a Mohegan Lake Republican who was arrested last year for a small bag of marijuana (charges were dropped) will be one of the Republicans supporting the legislation, unlike previous Republicans who have been slow to find legitimacy of the medicine.
A representative from A&A Packaging commented that “having such a prolific state like New York legalize medical marijuana, will have a profound effect on how other states address the need for marijuana reform in the future, and will hopefully subside Republican antipathy towards the medicine.” A&A Packaging has been at the forefront of the medical marijuana industry before legalization was signed into law, and has always been a firm advocate of medical patients and dispensaries rights.
