Independent surveys conducted by leading office supplies retailer Stationery Planet (http://www.stationeryplanet.com) has found that 68% of office workers experience muscular aches and back pains. It has been found that height-adjustable desks may provide one solution to the detrimental effects sitting down for extended periods of time can have. However, the innovative ‘standing-desks’ are expensive and are an unfeasible solution for most offices. As office workers become increasingly health-conscious, with an increasing uptake of intensive exercise courses, they have looked towards ergonomic chair designs to improve posture and overall health (source: http://www.juststand.org/Portals/3/literature/Neuhaus2014.pdf).

With constantly increasing working hours, the time spent sitting in an office chair is also rising. Stationery Planet have conducted an independent survey to find that 68% of office workers suffer from chronic muscular and back pains as a result of long office hours and time spent seated in a constant position.

There is are increasing numbers of studies published that show the negative health impacts that sitting for extended period of time can have. In the study published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity, information from 63058 men was gathered about the total number of hours spent sitting and correlated this data with the risk of chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It was found that there was a 10% higher risk in men who reported sitting for between six and eight hours a day. There is an increasing availability of ergonomic office chair designs that are specifically designed to provide the correct support. The best designs have heightened lumbar support and breathable mesh seats. Stationery Planet has determined that the key component is to ensure that the body is in a position so that blood circulates and nothing becomes stagnant or unused.
