Open House scheduled for June 19; classes begin June 30.

Vista College’s Longview campus is the first of Vista’s eight on-ground campuses to offer a Patient Care Technician (PCT) diploma program. The community is invited to an open house showcasing the new program on June 19, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at 1905 West Loop 281. Now enrolling for a June 30 class start date, the new Patient Care Technician diploma program provides students with specific, hands-on training in basic care and living activities, preparing them for careers in nursing and residential care facilities, hospitals or home health agencies.

“Many typical duties previously performed by nurses and other staff from several different departments are now being handled by PCTs,” said Torris Ferguson, Vista College Campus Director. “There is an increasing need for cross-trained health care workers in all types of health care facilities.”

Program topics include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, time management, emergency care, admission and discharge procedures, rehabilitation, nutrition, phlebotomy, and EKG technology.

Examples of specific skills taught include blood and non-blood specimen collection procedures, rhythm strip documentation, and how to perform routine electrocardiograms. The estimated completion time for this new diploma program is 40 weeks.

“We’re excited to bring the PCT diploma program to Longview and the surrounding communities,” added Ferguson. “It means that anyone with a passion for healthcare, a commitment to helping provide a better quality of life for others, and the desire to take their career to the next level can receive the training they need to face the workforce with confidence. We hope the community will take advantage of the upcoming Open House, which is a great opportunity to not only learn more about this new diploma program, but also to check out the many other career paths available at Vista College.”
