NPC Thanks the US for the UNHRC Resolution on Sri Lanka, Tamils for Obama Concurs
Jaffna, Sri Lanka (PRWEB) May 31, 2014 -- The Sri Lankan Northern Provencal Council (NPC) passed a resolution in which they thanked the US and 23 other countries for calling for the investigation of crimes against humanity committed in Sri Lanka during the ethnic war.
"We are really proud of the White House and the State Department for bringing this up at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva," said a spokesman for Tamils for Obama. "We think it is especially remarkable that this UNHRC resolution passed three times."
The NPC is an elected body representing the predominantly Tamil northern province of Sri Lanka. It has no legislative power.
"It is especially important that Tamils in Sri Lanka passed this resolution thanking the USA," said the spokesman. "We wanted to point that out to the White House."
Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan ethnic war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
