Natural Power deploys leading wind assessment tools for Saorgus

Share Article

The analysis team of international renewable energy consultancy Natural Power has delivered comprehensive Energy Yield Analysis (EYA) studies across Irish developer Saorgus Energy Limited’s wind portfolio.

Natural Power commenced work on Cordal Wind Farm in Country Kerry, Ireland in 2011. The proposed 84 MW wind farm is on complex forested terrain. When assessing the site, Natural Power applied industry-leading Computational Fluid Dynamics software (VENTOS® CFD) and methodology in order to accurately define the wind regime on the site and mitigate project risks for the Client.

The consultancy were also appointed by Saorgus to undertake EYA studies on the developers’ Dromadda More Wind Farm in Lyracrompane, in the North of County Kerry. The proposed turbine locations were on non-complex terrain and industry standard Wind Atlas Analysis and Application flow modelling software (WAsP) was used to predict wind speeds at the turbine locations, based on nearby mast data.

Natural Power has been assisting Clients to develop sites in complex terrain for over 10 years and have a thorough understanding of what quantifies the complexity of a site’s wind resource, how the financial risks can be calculated and how operational losses can be mitigated.

The project was led by Natural Power Wind Analyst Neil Koronka, who commented: “Saorgus are a valued Client who we very much enjoy working with and it is has been particularly rewarding to apply our industry-leading tools to support the technical progression of their portfolio through to a successful conclusion.”

Natural Power presented at EWEA 2014 and AWEA Windpower 2014 on a revolutionary advancement in the application of CFD – a meso-scale coupled CFD tool, currently being developed by Natural Power. For a white paper on the new tool, email sayhello(at)naturalpower(dot)com.

Damien Courtney, general manager of Saorgus Energy commented: “Natural Power’s professional advice has allowed Saorgus Energy to develop a range of wind farms on a project finance basis. Natural Power’s advice has spanned all aspects of wind assessment including Energy Yield Analysis for financial due diligence, verification of results on complex terrain using LIDAR, and operational performance review of projects post construction. We value Natural Power’s professional service and prompt delivery greatly and enjoy working with the team.”
