City of Baton Rouge to Implement Hexagon Geospatial’s Mobile MapWorks
NORCROSS, Ga. (PRWEB) June 03, 2014 -- Hexagon Geospatial announces that the City of Baton Rouge, La., is implementing Mobile MapWorks to help enhance the process for tracking trees on public property, as well as cataloging address data for use in emergencies, public notifications and collecting taxes.
Mobile MapWorks is a downloadable iOS and Android app for viewing, editing and updating field asset information in real-time. Accessible through a simple interface, it uses OGC-standard web services and is compatible with all GIS platforms on the market.
“We are excited to begin using Mobile MapWorks to improve our methods of collecting address and tree data,” said Warren Kron, GIS Coordinator, Baton Rouge City-Parish Planning Commission. “This solution will allow our surveyors to quickly record location and attribute data while writing directly to the database. With this new technology, there will be no need to export and import data.”
As Baton Rouge is renowned for its wealth of enormous live oak trees and stands of bottomland hardwood forests, it will make use of Mobile MapWorks to capture point data and attributes for trees within public servitudes and right-of-way areas. The data collected will range from the genus and species of the trees all the way down to the root structure. Furthermore, the solution will be used to alert officials and citizens about potential canopy conflicts with utility power lines, and more. This information is particularly important when preparing for and responding to severe wind storms such as Hurricane Gustav in 2008.
Data collected will be integrated into a larger tree canopy classification project that is being developed using ERDAS IMAGINE. Insights from this project will help update Baton Rouge’s 1995 Urban Forest Management Plan, including tracking trees impacted by hurricanes and new land development projects.

The City of Baton Rouge is also using Mobile MapWorks for the development of a dependent address survey, which will collect citizen address data to help locate people during emergencies, send out important notifications and assist with tax collection. The project will support local first responders in their efforts to develop the most comprehensive catalogue of citizen location data.
Users of Mobile MapWorks can work directly in their database without any data conversion, synchronization, or temporary data stores. This open architecture also allows field updates to become instantly available to any and all GIS platforms, on the desktop, web, or mobile devices. As with the City of Baton Rouge, the interface and backend can be easily customized to meet the needs of local governments, utilities and public works organizations, as well as meet the specialized asset management needs of defense and intelligence agencies.
