Internal Physical Security in a data center is just as important as external physical security. Companies do not want just anyone to have access to the data center. Companies want to have as much control as we can, which is why data centers go to great lengths to have many levels of security. There are multiple levels of Internal Physical Security in a data center. One is an access list.
The access list is a list of people, which a company would give to the data center, that are allowed to access to the data center floor. The data center is to check this list every time someone from a company comes in. It is important that the data center know of any personnel changes on our list so that only the individuals from the company that are supposed to have access are entering the data center floor.
After a data center has checked a company’s access list, they would ask for sign in information and IDs. Once a company is signed in they would get an HID proximity card that would grant them access to the data center floor. Companies first have to be accompanied by a data center employee to pass through the biometric recognition screener. Not just anyone is programmed into the biometric recognition screener. With this recognition screener, a data center can tell exactly who is letting people into the data center.
Once a company is on the data center floor, their racks are individually keyed. This ensures that other companies cannot come in and access just anyone’s rack. For an extra level of security some companies request dedicated cages. The data center can put an HID proximity card reader on the dedicated cage so that only that company’s access list can reach it.
So, companies want to make sure that they are checking all levels of Internal Physical Security. They would look for an access list, a form of biometric screening, HID card readers and individually keys racks to ensure the best protection they are getting the best protection that they can.
