The Haight: Love, Rock, and Revolution by Joel Selvin

"...a one-of-a-kind book that captures the essence of the era through Jim Marshall’s lens"

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 11, 2014

The counterculture movement of the 1960s is one of the most fascinating and endlessly examined moments of the twentieth century. Widely regarded as the cradle of the revolution, the Haight grew from a small neighborhood in San Francisco to a worldwide phenomenon that extends far beyond the boundaries of the famous Haight-Ashbury intersection itself. Nearly fifty years later, the footprint of that era still reverberates today in music, fashion, politics, literature, and more.

Legendary photographer and Grammy Trustees Award–winner Jim Marshall—renowned for his powerful portraits of some of the greatest musicians of our time—visually chronicled the movement as perhaps no one else did, with the same unique eye and intimate approach that made him one of the best photographers in the music world. Now, a treasure trove of his never-before-seen San Francisco photographs will be published by Insight Editions in The Haight: Love, Rock, and Revolution (Insight Editions / October 14, 2014)—a one-of-a-kind book that captures the essence of the era through Jim Marshall’s lens. Written by best-selling San Francisco music journalist Joel Selvin, The Haight will show the Summer of Love like it’s never been seen before: live concerts, powerful candids, intimate sessions with rock icons, street scenes, crash pads, and more.

Containing hundreds of stunning photographs featuring subjects from the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Jefferson Airplane to Donovan, Bill Graham, Allen Ginsberg, and Timothy Leary, The Haight will tell the comprehensive story of the revolutionary aspects of the era through an intimate and revealing narrative, lending the images a fascinating context and perspective.

Complete with a foreword by Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane, a preface by Donovan, and an afterword by former LOOK magazine editor John Poppy, The Haight will be a bold and beautiful collection encompassing the full scope and nuance of Marshall’s San Francisco photography and offering fresh insight into Haight-Ashbury, the Summer of Love, and beyond.

About the Photographer:
Jim Marshall is world renowned as the pioneer of rock-and-roll photography. A principal photographer at Woodstock and the only photographer allowed backstage at the Beatles’ final concert, he immortalized bands such as the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane before they became household names. His unlimited access to musicians allowed him to capture some of the most iconic images in music history. In 2014, Marshall became the first and only photographer to receive the Trustees Award, an honorary GRAMMY, for documenting the evolution of music over a period of five decades.

About the Author:
Joel Selvin has covered pop music for the San Francisco Chronicle since 1970. He is the author of more than twelve other books, including the #1 New York Times best seller Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock (with Sammy Hagar) and the classic best-selling account of the Haight in the sixties, Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Free Love, and High Times in the Wild West. A close friend of Jim Marshall, Selvin has worked on virtually every book Marshall has produced since their 1992 collaboration, Monterey Pop. He lives in San Francisco.
