According to the Durango Herald, Erika Langhart, 24 of Durango, Colorado, was preparing to attend Georgtown University when she suffered two unexpected heart attacks and died in November of 2011. Erika's parents insist her death was caused due to her use of the birth control NuvaRing and have since filed a lawsuit that is now part of the 3800 NuavRing lawsuits pending litigation.
In February, Merck & Co., which manufactures NuvaRing, agreed to pay $100 million to settle all NuvaRing lawsuits across the country, for an average of $58,000 per case. The Langharts, however, told the Durango Herald that they refuse to settle with Merck. The Langharts have formed a nonprofit organization in Arizona called “Informed Choice for America,” to educate women about the potentially deadly side effects of NuvaRing. In addition to the Langharts, the CNN report will also interview others who say they lost family and friends because of the alleged blood-clotting side effects of NuvaRing.
