West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 04, 2014
South Florida’s leading urgent care provider, MD Now Urgent Care, has stocked up on the measles vaccine after the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued an urgent warning predicting a record number of cases for 2014. MD Now will offer the vaccine to both adults and children at all its locations in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.
Dr. Richard Besser, former acting director of the CDC and currently ABC’s chief medical editor, warns that, “Measles is wildly infectious,” and the number of cases this year is, “the most since the virus was eliminated in the U.S. back in 2000.” The New York Times attributes the rise to unvaccinated Amish missionaries from Ohio who traveled to the Philippines and the large number of unvaccinated children from an area in San Diego.
The CDC’s Dr. Anne Schuchat explains, “Measles anywhere in the world can reach our communities, and unvaccinated Americans are at risk.” She adds, “Our key message today is that we can stop this from being an even greater problem.”
Peter Lamelas, M.D., CEO of MD Now Urgent Care says, “We’re acting swiftly to ensure that the people of South Florida are protected from this potentially deadly virus. The vaccine will be available immediately at all 18 of our medical centers, which are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year.” Dr. Lamelas adds, “By making the vaccine readily accessible, we hope that more people will take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this highly infectious virus.”
Dr. Lamelas also recommends that those exhibiting a rash on the face and neck that spreads to the trunk; along with fever, cold-like symptoms such as a cough, conjunctivitis and spots in the mouth, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest MD Now Urgent Care center. “Our on-site physicians are trained to recognize the symptoms of measles and provide appropriate care.” According to a number of sources, there have been 288 confirmed cases in the U.S. in the first five months of the year. Already, MD Now has treated a measles case in South Florida. “Without widespread vaccinations, it’s only a matter of time before we see more,” warns Dr. Lamelas.
