It’s the start of summer and that means it’s time for sports, sunshine and home improvement projects, all of which can leave eyes injured and hurting. Weil Eye Care knows that the summer season is chock full of potential hazards for eyes, but with a little preparation, they can be protected from injury.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 44 percent of all eye injuries occur in or around the home, most often during home improvement projects. Summer may be a great time for getting those projects done around the house, but debris from chopping wood, hammering nails or sawdust can be harmful for eyes. It’s important to keep a pair of certified safety glasses on hand and wear them around any home projects.
During the summer, it’s especially important to protect eyes from overexposure to the sun’s UV rays. Skin isn’t the only part of the body that needs protection from the sun; Eyes need it as well. Wearing sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB is the best way to keep eyes safe when outdoors in the sunshine.
Many people enjoy outdoor activities during the summer, such as sports and other exercise. Sports with smaller balls, like baseball, softball, golf and badminton, make eye injuries more likely. For these sports, it’s important to wear protective eyewear. Sports and exercise also help keep eyes healthy by stimulating good blood circulation and oxygen intake.
Eye injuries don’t exclusively happen during the summer. Consider taking these safety steps around the home to diminish the risks of injuring eyes all year round:
- Make sure that rugs and shower/bath mats are slip-proof to avoid falling
- Secure railings so that they are not loose
- Cushion sharp corners and edges of furnishings and home fixtures
