Sophia Louisa Lee Has Written an Original One Woman Play Specifically for the Whitefire Theater’s Annual Solofest, a Weekly Series of One Person Plays That Closes June 22

It’s Personal is about Ava Lesley Cain, a successful campaign manager who plays the game so well her candidates have never lost an election. The goal is to engineer the election of Janice Williamson as the first woman mayor of Los Angeles. When things do not go as planned, Ava is asked to run for office in place of Ms. Williamson. When Ava’s sordid past catches up to her, she must deconstruct her demons before making a decision that could leave her exposed.
The Whitefire Theater has a long history of supporting one person plays as well as original works. Sophia Louisa Lee is a working actress, having just finished shooting the new Markiss McFadden feature All I Ever Wanted, and a member of the theater’s ensemble wherein she is currently in rehearsals for David Svengalis’ Full Disclosure in Spring Shorts and Michael Sardo’s Dads’ Club in Hollywood Shorts. Sophia Louisa accepted the challenge of writing an original piece specifically for Solofest 2014 when the theater’s artistic director brought it up during an ensemble meeting. Warned that it would be a huge undertaking, Ms. Lee jumped at the opportunity. “It has been the most exciting, exhilarating and terrifying experience. This is only the beginning,” exclaims Ms. Lee, a mother of a teen girl with Mosaic Down Syndrome. “My daughter is so excited she is now writing her own story!”
Exposed! is directed by Kathleen Rubin, a former opera singer and vocal instructor who discovered her passion for directing theater. Ms. Rubin is known for having directed Happy Face/Sad Face, Addition By Subtraction, and Cannibals. It’s Just My Life is a play of monologues about real women and their lives conceived and directed by Ms. Rubin. It is currently in production.
